Healthcare on the Horizon

A raging debate topic for politicians and average citizens alike, healthcare has been on everyone’s lips. Current events in the matter seem to foretell that the issue is swaying to the direction of major change. President of the United States, Barack Obama, proposes a more government centered healthcare system. He believes that through government regulated and sponsored programs, can the American healthcare issue be resolved. But have all other avenues been explored?

Since most government programs become permanent whether or not they fail or succeed, it would be wise of our society to work through all possible options before deciding on such a dramatic and concrete conclusion. Traditionally, government programs are hard to track in the efficiency department. There are no market standards or rulers of accurate measurement when dealing with a government program.  So establishing a government healthcare system could yield a failing system which the American people would have very little way to track until much time and resources became wasted. The American people must exhaust all other options before settling on such a drastic and permanent decision.

Relatively small changes to the legal system and the way medical lawsuits are handled can lead to a decrease in healthcare costs. Better oversight on lobbyists and politicians to get a better handle on corruption. Attempts to stop needless healthcare spending can lower healthcare costs. All these things are not as important as; handing over more responsibility to the individual when it comes to preventative healthcare.

Many chronic diseases such as diabetes, smoking, and obesity take a huge toll on the healthcare industry. All three of these things can be directly controlled by the individual. But the only way for this to correct itself is for the individual to be held accountable, sometimes by facing the consequences. It may seem like a harsh statement and very insensitive, but it’s simply the easiest and fairest way to solve healthcare here in America. A good example of this can be seen in the organ donor program. People who willingly destroy the organs that God gave them through substance abuse or other means which they had complete control of are less likely to receive donor organs than someone who didn’t.

Incurring the cost of smoking or living an unhealthy lifestyle on the individual will force them to change their habits. Example, if an obese person has to take on the medical cost of treatment and can no longer afford to spend twenty dollars on the dollar menu for lunch, and then they will be forced to lose weight and eat more sensibly, which will lead to a permanent correction to their condition. Being fat and unhealthy is a privilege and not a right. So if a person wishes to gorge themselves on food, drugs, alcohol, and/or tobacco then they better make sure they can afford the healthcare.

So while the easy solution may be to shrug the responsibility over to someone else (the government), it’s immoral and unjust for a person to infringe on the rights of others when the individual is solely responsible. Government sponsored healthcare should not be the first option; it should be the last resort.

Although I tend to agree that Americans have only themselves to blame for the majority of their health problems, look at other contries that don’t have a fast food establishment every block. Look how well they are. I believe that more healthy food establishments that offer much better choices and less fat food choices, we would all benefit. Marketing and greed in the fast food industry, has caused a major health issue for our children as we take the fast way out and feed them the fast food and let them sit all day watching tv instead of encouraging them to get outdoors and ride bikes or play hide and seek like we did as kids.Parents have become to lax in supporting exersize and healthy eating. America is the fatest country in the world. Not something to be proud of is it? So if we could get this problem solved half of the health issues would be solved. Add to that the greed of the health industries that push every drug for every problem we seem to think the magic cure is in a pill. That is not the case. The only magic is the money the pharmacutical companies are making. Very sad indeed.

  2. If you’re wanting to live a healthier life, there’s no better place to start. This book was a life-changing read for me. My friend recommended that I read the book and give the cleanse a try. I did and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve been recommending the book to friends and family ever since. The book is an easy read. I read the book cover to cover in less than two hours and I wouldn’t consider myself a fast reader. The content was simple, clear, and concise. It answered all of the questions I had regarding the cleanse. I chose to do the cleanse for a variety of reasons. I lost 20 pounds on a 20 day cleanse (and the weight is still off), I have more energy now than ever, and now I have a sense of clarity that is helping me to make better decisions in my life. The cleanse does take a healthy helping of willpower, but just take it day my day. It’s only 10, 20, or 30 days out of the 365 in a year.
