FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Scottsdale Fire Department, in partnership with local and national community services agencies, is pleased to announce the inaugural Arizona 9/11 Remembrance & National Day of Service Event to be held Sept. 10-13, 2009, at Scottsdale Civic Center Mall.
On April 21, 2009, President Barak Obama signed into office the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, making 9/11 a National Day of Service and Remembrance and is a tribute to all who perished on Sept.11, 2001.
Join community leaders, neighbors, and valley citizens for a weekend of events that will pay tribute to the men, women and children who lost their lives, all those who sacrificed their lives, and the heroes that responded to 9/11.
Scheduled events on Friday, Sept. 11 include a morning and evening ceremony featuring key note speakers, city and state dignitaries and live music. On Saturday, Sept. 12, Hangar Prosthetics and Orthotics will host a 5K Amp walk designed to raise community awareness and support amputees nationwide and United Blood Services will be set-up for blood donations at their mobile unit.
The centerpiece of the tribute and backdrop for many of the events will be a 9/11 Memorial Wall with 2,996, full-color, 4×6 memorial cards, with biographical information and a photograph of each of the fallen victims along with the National Unity Flag, standing nearly three-stories high.
In addition, several local and national community service agencies will display exhibits to provide the public with information on how to get involved and help those in need, in recognition of our Nation’s National Day of Service.
The Arizona 9/11 Remembrance & National Day of Service events are free and open to the public.

9/11 Memorial Wall Display
The 9/11 Memorial Wall Display features 2,996 full-color, 4×6 memorial cards with biographical information and a photograph of each person who perished as a direct result of the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001. The memorial cards, designed by Lisa Vella of Scottsdale, Arizona, will be displayed on portable memorial walls throughout the Civic Center Mall lawn area. There will be memorial wall sections for the victims of the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and Philadelphia, as well as a special section for our brave firefighters and police officers.
The National Unity Flag Display
The National Unity Flag is a very patriotic and moving 9/11 Memorial which was designed by Randy Cooney of Phoenix, Arizona. It stands nearly three stories high, has toured the country and has been signed by the entire U.S. Senate. The National Unity Flag includes the flags of our Nation’s 50 states and six districts. The center piece of this memorable tribute is the names of all the victims of 9/11 alongside the Statue of Liberty.
Community Service Exhibits
Several local and national community service agencies will have exhibits to create public awareness and provide the public with information on how to get involved to help those in need. These exhibits will be in recognition of our Nation’s National Day of Service.
