For years the real estate market has been fueled by the MLS which has in turn been guided by the NAR (National Association of Realtors). The MLS is a huge database of homes for sale that could mainly be accessed by only real estate agents. However, with the advent of the internet and the sharing of information, databases like the MLS are available to the public for everyday use.
Before, to buy or sell a home, people had to go to a real estate agent to rely on marketing their home. But now, there are so many free and efficient ways for “for sale by owner” home sellers to get their home to multiple buyers. Technology has put more power in the hands of the consumer. Real estate agents often have mixed feeling about this new and growing technological foundation.
The big real estate companies with multiple agents were hit the hardest. The system that they had set up for many years had all the sudden become obsolete. They no longer had their unique Faberge egg call the MLS that they could show to people for a price. Now everyone had access to similar eggs at no cost to them. However, there are always the adapters and survivors.
With the internet basically leveling the playing field, new companies sprang up. Individual real estate agents had a louder voice. Smaller firms dominated the real estate markets. Those who embraced the new medium flourished and grew to see astronomical individual success. It is the adapters that continually change and grow that will always survive.
